MOORPARK, Calif. – Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST), a global business unit of Schneider Electric, has a line of robustly designed pressure sensors that will play a key role in curbing emissions and improving fuel economy for the rail sector. Rail is one of the leading sources of transport globally for freight and passengers. This cost-effective and efficient mode of transportation can help reduce emissions that contribute to global warming by minimizing the ever-increasing number of vehicles clogging the world’s roadways. To accomplish this, however, rail needs to dramatically reduce and manage its own source of emissions.
In March of 2007, the EPA proposed a three-part program that would dramatically reduce emissions from all types of diesel locomotives. The proposal aims to cut Particulate Matter (PM) emissions from these engines by 90% and NOx emissions by 80%. Built to withstand and perform with extreme accuracy and reliability in the hostile environmental conditions found in the rail sector, CST’s pressure sensors hit the mark.
Fuel Efficiency – Turbo boost pressure is monitored by CST pressure sensors to ensure that the air/fuel mixture is optimized, while CST air filter restriction sensors measure the flow of air through the intake filter maintaining sufficient flow for engine “breathing” needs.
Engine Health – Maintaining engine temperature to avoid overheating is the task of CST’s coolant pressure sensors. As costs associated with repair and maintenance continue to escalate, preventing such an incident is a critical factor in preserving overall engine life and CST sensors assist in doing just that.
CST sensors utilize field proven silicon MEMS, ceramic capacitive, and piezo-resistive technologies dependent upon application requirements. Sensors are designed to meet the exact specification required for each application with a variety of options for housing materials, process and electrical connections, output and more.
Headquartered in Moorpark, CA, Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) is a global business unit of Schneider Electric and is comprised of the industry-leading brands of Crouzet, Kavlico, Crydom, as well as the former divisions of BEI technologies, including Newall and Systron Donner. CST provides sensors, controls, and actuation products for the transportation, industrial, and aerospace & defense markets. www.cst.schneider-electric.com
